HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ELECTRIC KETTLE
One of the first things to consider when choosing an electric kettle is its wattage. Wattage determines how fast the kettle can heat water. The higher the wattage, the faster the kettle boils. Most kettles range between 1500 watts and 2200 watts. A kettle rated at 1500 watts will typically boil 1 litre of water in about 4 to 5 minutes, while a 2000-watt kettle can do the same in just 2 to 3 minutes.
If you’re boiling water several times a day, for example, in a busy home, salon, or office, then a higher wattage kettle is ideal. However, if you're conscious about electricity usage or live in an area with unstable power supply, a 1500-watt kettle will suffice since it offers a good balance between speed and energy efficiency.
Kenya has diverse water conditions. If you live in areas with fresh (soft) water like Nairobi, Eldoret, Kericho, or Kisii, most kettles will serve you well. The water in these regions has low mineral content, meaning there's less risk of scale buildup, and your kettle will last longer with minimal maintenance.
Safety is crucial when it comes to any electrical appliance, especially one involving heat and water. Always choose a kettle with auto shut-off. This feature turns the kettle off automatically once the water reaches boiling point, preventing overheating or dry-boiling.
Electric kettles come in various sizes, typically ranging from 0.8 litres to 2 litres. The size you choose should match your daily water usage. For solo users or occasional tea drinkers, a small kettle between 0.8 to 1 litre is enough. For small families or couples, 1.2 to 1.5 litres is usually sufficient. Larger households, offices, or places that serve many people, like salons, should consider kettles with a 1.7 to 2-litre capacity.
Electric kettles are generally made from three materials: plastic, stainless steel, or glass. Each has its pros and cons.
- Plastic kettles are lightweight, affordable, and usually cool to the touch. They’re perfect for students, rentals, or budget-conscious shoppers. However, some cheap plastic kettles may retain the smell of plastic or warp over time, especially when exposed to salty water or high heat regularly.
-
Stainless steel kettles are durable, fast-boiling, and resistant to damage from salty or hard water. They are ideal for coastal areas and for users who boil water frequently. The downside is that the exterior can become hot to touch and the kettle itself is slightly heavier.
Glass kettles are stylish and modern, allowing you to see the water as it boils. They look great in open kitchens and are ideal in areas with soft water. However, they’re fragile, can show scale buildup clearly, and are not recommended for use with salty water.
You’ll find a wide variety of electric kettles on SmartplyConnect.com and other retail platforms in Kenya. Common brands include:
- Sayona
- Ramtons
- Von Hotpoint
- Philips
- Scarlett
- Premier
Whether you prefer to buy online or from local electronics stores, the Kenyan market offers both imported and locally distributed options with warranty and after-sales support.
Market Trends in 2025: What’s Popular Right Now?
The electric kettle market in Kenya is growing rapidly. In 2025, more people are searching for energy-saving models, multi-function kettles, and kettles with smart temperature controls. Some newer models come with preset temperatures for green tea, black tea, or even baby formula, ensuring you don’t overheat delicate beverages.
There's also a rising demand for digital kettles with LED indicators and one-touch boil functions. In coastal regions, shoppers are specifically seeking out kettles with built-in descaling filters or “anti-calc” features to combat mineral buildup.
As electricity prices rise, energy efficiency is becoming a key buying factor, especially for people who boil water several times a day.
If you live in salty water regions, choose a stainless steel kettle with a removable limescale filter. Avoid glass, and consider a model with a wide mouth for easier cleaning. For those who are boiling water throughout the day in busy homes or salons, a 1.8-litre, 1800-watt kettle will offer speed and capacity.
If your goal is to save energy, go for a 1500-watt model with quick-boil coils and automatic shut-off. For parents with toddlers, a temperature-controlled kettle with a warm mode and locking lid is ideal. Students and singles can settle for compact plastic kettles that are lightweight and affordable.
To extend the lifespan of your kettle, descale it regularly, especially if you live in an area with hard water. You can use vinegar, lemon water, or commercial descalers. Always unplug the kettle after use and avoid overfilling or boiling below the minimum level. Rinse the inside gently and clean the filter every few weeks to keep performance optimal.
